India is near completion of a 130-kilometer alternative road to the key Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO) military base in eastern Ladakh, with full operational capability projected by October-November 2026, reported The Times Of India.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has finished major segments of the route that enhances troop and logistics movement in the sensitive region.
The new route begins at Sasoma, Nubra Valley, and runs through Saser Brangsa before reaching the DBO outpost. DBO has an Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) at an elevation of 16,614 feet, near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the China-occupied Aksai Chin area.
Progress
BRO has finished all connecting and black-topping work from Sasoma to Saser Brangsa, as well as 60-70 per cent of the road east to Murgo and Gapshan. To determine load capability, BRO has already moved heavy military equipment, including Bofors cannon, on completed segments.
A source stated that the entire 130-km road (Sasoma-Saser La-Saser Brangsa-Gapshan-DBO) should be ready by October-November 2026.
Improvements
The road leads away from the LAC, reducing the possibility of Chinese surveillance. Unlike the previous 255-kilometer Darbuk-Shyok-DBO road, which closely parallels the LAC, this alternate route improves troop security and strategic depth.
Future Plans
India is also developing a 7-kilometer tunnel beneath Saser La, located at 17,660 feet, to provide all-weather communication. The road work was accelerated following the 2020 military standoff with China and troop withdrawal from the Depsang Plains in October last year.
