Budget Session: Here Are The Key Highlights From President Murmu's First Address To The Joint Sitting In New Parliament

In her first address in the new parliament building, President Droupadi Murmu kicked off the Budget Session of Parliament on 31 January with her address to the joint sitting, highlighting key achievements and future goals.

The President praised the passage of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam (women's reservation bill) and expressed confidence in positive discussions in the new Parliament building.

Here are the key points from the President's address :

  1. Speaking on the new parliament building, she said, “This is my first address in the new Parliament building. This new (Parliament) building has been constructed during the beginning of the 'Amrit Kaal' and it has the essence of 'Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat'."

  2. President Murmu highlighted the achievements of the Narendra Modi-led government in the past 10 years and said poverty was being alleviated on a large-scale.

    She said, "The achievements that we see today are the extension of the practices of the last 10 years. We heard the slogan of 'Garibi Hatao' since our childhood. Today, for the first time in our lives, we see poverty being alleviated on a large scale."

    3. Praising the government for its defence production crossing the one lakh-crore mark, President said that Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat have become the strengths of the country's development journey.

    4. The President also spoke on the Ayodhya Ram Temple, Abrogation of Article 370 and triple talaq.

    She said, "(People were) hopeful of construction of Ram Temple (in Ayodhya) for centuries and that dream has been fulfilled now. (People also) wanted the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. Now, Article 370 is also history." “This Parliament has made a strict law against triple talaq."

    5. President Droupadi Murmu said inflation in the country was kept under control despite the Covid-19 pandemic and two major wars.

    "In the past years, the world witnessed two major wars and faced a pandemic like Covid-19. Despite such global crises, my government kept inflation under control in the country and did not let the burden on common Indians increase," she said.

    6. She also said that the BJP-led NDA government has continuously worked on making it easy to do business in India and creating a suitable environment for it.

    President Murmu also emphasized the government's commitment to empower MSMEs and small entrepreneurs.

    7. Prez Murmu also spoke on utilization of tax to empower youth, women, farmers, poor.

    She said, “A big portion of tax has been utilised to empower youth, women, farmers, poor. My govt believes the grand edifice of a developed India will stand on 4 strong pillars of youth power, women power, farmers, poor."
