By-Elections For 12 Vacant Rajya Sabha Seats On 3 September—All About It

The Election Commission on Wednesday (7 August) announced that by-elections for 12 Rajya Sabha seats will be conducted on 3 September.

Ten vacancies were created as Rajya Sabha members were elected to the Lok Sabha, with an additional two seats opening due to the resignation of sitting MPs.

Among those Rajya Sabha MPs who got elected to the Lok Sabha are Union ministers Piyush Goyal (Maharashtra), Deepender Singh Hooda (Haryana), Jyotiraditya Scindia (Madhya Pradesh), and Congress leader K C Venugopal (Rajasthan), Hindustan Times reported.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi MP K Keshava Rao resigned on 5 July, while Biju Janata Dal MP Mamta Mohanta stepped down on 31 July.

The Election Commission said that the notification for the elections will be issued on 14 August, with the submission window for nominations open until 21 August.

The scrutiny of nominations will be conducted on 22 August.

Votes are set to be counted on 3 September, and the entire election process must be finalised by 6 September, according to the commission.

The Election Commission has instructed that only “integrated violet colour sketch pen(s) of pre-fixed specification” provided by the returning officer will be used to mark preferences on the ballot paper.
