The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is set to witness a transformative leap in urban transportation as the proposed cable car project received in-principle approval from Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.

The announcement followed a meeting of state transport ministers in New Delhi, where Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik presented the ambitious plan.

The cable car system aims to tackle the growing challenges of urbanization and the increasing strain on MMR’s public transport infrastructure. Spanning the region from Palghar to Uran-Pen in Raigad district, the aerial transport system is envisioned as a sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional modes of transportation, with the potential to significantly reduce travel time between suburbs and Mumbai Airport.

According to Sarnaik, the project will be implemented through a public-private partnership (PPP) model or a joint financial collaboration between the central and state governments.

Union Minister Gadkari has directed V Umashankar, Secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, to conduct a detailed survey and prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to assess the project’s feasibility, reports Times Of India.

Emphasising the need for an integrated transport system, Gadkari highlighted the importance of addressing congestion and pollution challenges in the region.

Sarnaik added that a comprehensive transport plan, incorporating the cable car system and other innovative solutions, is under development and will be presented for further consideration.

"This initiative will revolutionise transportation in the MMR and address pressing challenges like traffic congestion, pollution, and infrastructure gaps," said Sarnaik, expressing optimism about the project’s potential to transform urban mobility.

The technical and financial feasibility survey is set to commence shortly, with findings incorporated into the DPR. Once finalised, the cable car project could pave the way for a modern, integrated transportation network in one of India’s most densely populated urban regions.
