On Monday (21 July), a petition supporting the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma over cash discovery from his official residence was submitted by 145 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 63 MPs in the Rajya Sabha.

The impeachment motion was submitted by 145 Lok Sabha members, including Anurag Thakur, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, PP Chaudhary, Supriya Sule, and KC Venugopal. This action was taken against Justice Verma in accordance with Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution.

A proposal to dismiss a judge requires a minimum of 100 signatures from Members of Parliament in the Lok Sabha and 50 from the Rajya Sabha. The Speaker or Chairman of the House then has the authority to either approve or deny the motion.

Previously, K Suresh, a Member of Parliament from the Congress party, announced the party's complete backing for the impeachment proceedings against Justice Varma, aligning themselves with the INDI Alliance parties.

Kiren Rijiju, the Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister, stated on Sunday that more than 100 legislators have endorsed a notice for the impeachment of the current high court judge, Hindustan Times reported.

Last week, Rijiju announced that there is a unanimous agreement among all political parties regarding the impeachment of Justice Varma. This comes after burnt bundles of money were discovered at Varma's residence.

Despite Justice Varma's denial of any misconduct, an in-house inquiry panel appointed by the Supreme Court has determined that he and his family exerted direct control over the storeroom where the discovered cash was located. This evidence of misconduct was deemed severe enough to warrant his removal.
