The Union Government has informed the Parliament that 27 coastal National Highway (NH) projects covering 1,025 km and costing Rs 65,111 crore are currently under construction across six states.
These six states include Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
These projects, expected to be completed in a phased manner by financial year 2026-27, aim to enhance connectivity, logistics efficiency, and tourism infrastructure along India's extensive coastline.
In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said, "At present, 27 NHs projects in 1,025 km length costing ₹65,111 crore are under construction in the country for improving accessibility and connectivity to the mainland coastline, with completion in a phased manner by FY 2026-27".
According to the data shared by Gadkari, Kerala accounts for the largest share, with 16 projects covering 522 km at a cost of Rs 52,575 crore.
Tamil Nadu follows with three projects spanning 128 km and costing Rs 5,376 crore.
Maharashtra has three projects totaling 104 km at Rs 3,782 crore.
Gujarat’s two projects cover 110 km and cost Rs 1,298 crore, while Andhra Pradesh has two projects of 90 km at Rs 1,128 crore. Goa has one project of 71 km, estimated at Rs 952 crore.
An additional 890 km of coastal highways are in the detailed planning stage. This includes various stretches across multiple states for which Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are currently being prepared.
"Further, Government has taken up preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) for development of NHs in 890 km length for improving connectivity to the mainland coastline," Gadkari said.
