Union Civil Aviation Minister and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol on Friday (30 May) urged Union Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to expedite the central approvals for key extensions of the Pune Metro rail project.
The meeting, held in New Delhi, was aimed at fast-tracking proposals for Union Cabinet clearance and Public Investment Board (PIB) approval, Indian Express reported.
“Considering the expansion of the city due to rapid urbanisation, it is necessary to extend the Metro rail network,” said Mohol, pressing for swift tabling of the proposals in the Cabinet.
The state government has already cleared two crucial extensions — Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi.
“The Public Investment Board gave clearance to the extended route on 11 March. It only awaits the Union Cabinet’s approval so it’s a request to table it in the Cabinet as early as possible,” Mohol added.
In addition, Mohol highlighted that the Maharashtra government has also approved Phase II of the Pune Metro rail project.
This includes a new route from Kharadi to Khadakwasla via Hadapsar and Swargate, as well as a separate route from Nal Stop to Manikbaug via Warje.
“Phase two has been tabled before the Public Investment Board, so as soon as it gets clearance, the Union Urban Affairs department should speed up its tabling in the union Cabinet for approval,” the minister said.
Meanwhile, Pune Metro has already commenced design work for 14 of the proposed 22 stations on the Kharadi–Khadakwasla elevated corridor.
Efforts are also underway to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for new lines connecting Kharadi to Pune Airport at Lohegaon, and a spur line from Hadapsar to Kondhwa.
