Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has achieved a significant milestone by recording over one crore passengers in a single month for the first time.
In July 2025, the metro network saw a total of 1,03,78,835 passenger journeys, marking its highest-ever monthly ridership since operations began in June 2015, The New Indian Express reported.
This record-breaking figure comes as CMRL completes a decade of commercial service, underscoring the growing reliance on public transport in the city.
The July ridership figure represents a sharp increase of 11.6 lakh passengers compared to June 2025, which had recorded nearly 92 lakh trips.
Single Day Ridership Peak on July 4
Among the highlights of the month was a new single-day record set on July 4, 2025, when 3,74,948 commuters boarded the metro, marking the highest daily footfall for the month.
CMRL attributes this surge to factors such as reliable operations, better integration with feeder services, and changing commuter preferences towards cleaner, faster modes of urban transport.
Consistent Growth in 2025
The growth trajectory has been consistent through 2025.
Starting with 86.99 lakh passengers in January, CMRL's monthly ridership has steadily climbed, breaching the 92 lakh mark in March and June, before reaching the record-breaking 1.03 crore in July.
The sustained increase points to a broader shift in commuter behavior, driven by rising traffic congestion and the need for efficient mobility solutions.
Year - On Year Growth Reinforces Public Transit Adoption
In terms of annual figures, CMRL carried 10.52 crore passengers in 2024, a significant rise from 9.11 crore in 2023.
Since its inception on 29 June 2015, the metro has served a cumulative 35.53 crore commuters, with recent years contributing substantially to this total.
