Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) awarded the contract to Linxon India on Tuesday (31 January) to install power supply and overhead equipment for Corridor 3 (from Sholinganallur to Sipcot-2) and Corridor 5 (from CMBT to Sholinganallur) of the phase II project (CMRL).
The expansion of Metro Phase II is planned with a network length of 118.9 km with 128 stations. It consists of three corridors, namely Corridor-3 from Sholinganallur to SIPCOT (45.8 km), Corridor-4 from Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass (26.1 km), Corridor-5 from CMBT to Sholinganallur (47 km).
The Rs 404.45 crore project was awarded after a tender was issued in October 2021.
According to CMRL’s press release, the contractor will be responsible for designing, manufacturing, supplying, installing, testing, training, and commissioning RSS (receiving substation), ASS (auxiliary substation), OHE (overhead equipment) SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition), and Switching Stations in the 37 elevated stations of phase II.
It includes nine stations in corridor 3 (Sholinganallur-Sipcot-2), which spans 9.38 kilometres, and 28 elevated stations in corridor 5 (CMBT-Sholinganallur), which spans 29.05 kilometres.
The land acquisition for Chennai Phase II of the Metro Rail project is almost complete.
About 82 per cent of the required land has been acquired so far, according to Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL).
Currently, the Chennai Metro Rail is pushing up its efforts to open the section between Poonamallee and the lighthouse to the public within three years.
The estimated cost of the Phase II project is Rs 63,246 crore. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
