Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has invited bids for consultants to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for a proposed multimodal transit hub at Guindy, aimed at integrating metro, suburban rail, and bus services in one coordinated facility, The New Indian Express reported.
The initiative, led by Chennai Metro Asset Management Ltd (CMAML) which is a wholly owned CMRL subsidiary focusing on infrastructure planning and non-fare revenue generation, seeks to connect the Guindy Metro station on Corridor 1 with the adjacent suburban station on the Chennai Beach–Tambaram line and the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus terminus.
Preliminary concepts include an MTC bus terminal at ground level, basement parking for private vehicles, a commercial floor above to generate revenue, and the reconstruction of an existing student hostel with separate access.
Plans also feature a foot overbridge linking the suburban railway and metro to the hub.
The Tamil Nadu government, in its 2025–26 budget, allocated Rs 750 crore for multimodal hubs at both Guindy and Washermanpet, two locations identified by urban planners as key bottlenecks in Chennai’s public transport network.
Guindy, situated at the edge of the city’s industrial estate and a major traffic interchange, was marked as a priority for integration by the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) in 2022 under a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-assisted plan.
Tender documents indicate that the appointed consultant will undertake feasibility studies, land-use mapping, market assessments, and preliminary architectural and financial planning, as well as develop revenue models.
The role also involves coordination with the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) and Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to secure necessary statutory clearances.
