Chennai’s Metro expansion towards the western suburbs is set to change daily travel for thousands of commuters.

By 2030, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will extend the Phase II corridor from Koyambedu to Pattabiram via Ambattur and Avadi, integrating three state highway flyovers and a new multi-modal transit hub at Avadi, according to a Times of India report.

The 22 km corridor, part of the Rs 63,246 crore Phase II project funded by a mix of central and state allocations and multilateral loans from institutions such as JICA and AFD, is designed to improve connectivity to areas heavily dependent on suburban rail.

For residents of Tiruvallur, Tiruttani and Arakkonam, who currently rely on suburban trains to reach the city centre, the new line will provide direct metro access to Chennai Central, Egmore and even the airport through the interchange at Koyambedu.

State Highways Chief Engineer S Jawahar Muthuraj confirmed that the metro viaduct will share pillars with three flyovers planned along the Chennai–Tiruttani Highway (CTH).

“The pillars will be common for both the metro viaduct and flyover. Land acquisition is underway,” he was quoted as saying. This merger aims to streamline construction and cut costs.

In parallel, CMRL will call for a separate tender to relocate underground utilities such as pipelines and power cables to prevent delays.

“We have decided to divide the contract and complete the preliminary work first,” explained Project Director T Archunan, noting setbacks faced in Virugambakkam under Corridor 5.

Avadi, with its bus terminus and railway station located across CTH Road, has been earmarked as a multi-modal hub where suburban trains, buses and metro will converge. “Talks in this regard will be initiated soon,” officials added.
