Amid escalating competition with the US and regional powers, China's navy has commissioned a next-generation frigate, saying the ship will play an important role in "enhancing the overall combat effectiveness" of its forces.

China boasts the world's largest navy by hull count, although its technological advancements often face scrutiny.

In response, the US, China's primary rival, has cautioned about being outnumbered and has proposed fleet expansion alongside measures to expedite the repair of damaged vessels.

The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) primarily conducts operations along China's east coast and the strategically vital South China Sea, which Beijing claims nearly in full.

A significant objective for the Chinese navy remains supporting potential military action against Taiwan, a self-governing island nation about 160 km (100 miles) from China's shores that Beijing has pledged to reunify, including by force if required.

The PLAN's first Type 054B frigate, named Luohe, officially entered service on Wednesday in Qingdao, the northern port city hosting the fleet's northern command.

The ship has a displacement of approximately 5,000 tons and includes stealth technology, combat command systems and firepower integration, "significantly enhancing overall performance," the navy said.

"With strong capabilities for comprehensive combat operations and diverse military missions, the warship will play a vital role in enhancing the overall combat effectiveness of naval task forces," it added.

Equipped with close-combat machine guns, anti-aircraft, and anti-ship missiles, the Luohe is expected to become a key component of China's naval strength.

While the navy's statement did not confirm additional Type 054B frigates, reports suggest at least two have been launched, with one more under construction.

China's naval fleet comprises around 234 warships compared to 219 in the US Navy, including about 50 frigates and a similar number of destroyers.

Additionally, China operates two aircraft carriers, with a third undergoing trials, and maintains a robust coast guard.

Recent wargames have shown China would lose many more vessels in a simulated clash with the US, but would be able to absorb the losses and continue fighting.
