At least five Pakistani soldiers were killed and more than 30 others wounded in an attack by Baloch rebels in southwest Pakistan on Sunday (16 March), news agency AFP reported.

The incident comes after the train hijack in Balochistan province earlier in the week.

"There were seven buses in the convoy which was heading to Taftan (on the Iranian border). At Noshki, a car laden with explosives hit one of the buses," Mohammed Zafar, a police official in Balochistani town Noshki was quoted as saying by AFP.

According to Zafar, the attack left five soldiers dead and 35 wounded.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a key separatist group in the province, took responsibility for the attack. It stated that the bombing was executed by its suicide attack unit.

Earlier on Tuesday, the BLA carried out an attack on a train carrying 450 passengers. The attack led to a two-day siege of th during which dozens of people were killed.

The train attack highlighted the escalating violence in Balochistan, a province bordering Afghanistan. Separatist groups have long accused outsiders of exploiting the region’s natural resources.

In a separate incident, three Pakistani security force personnel were killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday evening.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has witnessed a surge in assaults by the Pakistani Taliban.

The militant group shares ideological and historical ties with the Afghan Taliban, which regained power in Kabul in 2021.
