All toll plazas operated by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will require motorists to pay using FASTag, starting from 1 April, Times of India reported.
The MSRDC has introduced a FASTag-only toll collection system across its network of toll plazas in Maharashtra.
This initiative aims to improve toll payment efficiency and ease congestion at toll booths. Transitioning to a digital toll system is expected to accelerate transactions at toll plazas.
The move will also eliminate long queues and delays caused by manual toll payments.
Motorists without FASTag will have to pay double the toll amount as a penalty, regardless of their payment method—cash, credit/debit card, or UPI.
The policy aligns with a national initiative by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to promote digital toll payments and eliminate manual collection across the country.
The state government has issued an official notification making FASTag mandatory at all MSRDC toll plazas.
"It may further be noted that in case a user desires to pay the user fee/toll by Cash, Smart Card, POS, Credit/ Debit Card QR Codes or any other mode of the payments other than the E-Tag or FASTag, and if a vehicle is not fitted with FASTag or vehicle without a valid, functional FASTag enters the Toll Plaza/s, shall pay a fee equivalent to two times of the User fee/toll as applicable to that Category of vehicles," the notification said.
The rule is not applicable on school buses, light motor vehicles, and State Transport buses.
These kinds of vehicles will not have to use FASTag at five key entry points into Mumbai, including toll plazas at Mulund West, Mulund East, Airoli, Dahisar, and Vashi, Times of India reported.
However, for major highways such as the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway, and the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway, the FASTag system will be strictly enforced.
The FASTag-only system will also apply to toll plazas on Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, and key routes such as Nagpur, Solapur, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar IRDP roads.
