The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has announced a Rs 3,000 crore road network project aimed at linking key highways and easing congestion across Pune’s busiest corridors.

The proposed network will directly connect Satara Road, Ahilyanagar Road, Solapur highway, Nashik highway, and the Pune-Mumbai highway, offering improved access to peripheral villages and emerging townships, the Times of India reported.

“We have zeroed in on all the roads that connect to the highways. We will undertake the repairs phase-wise,” said PMRDA commissioner Yogesh Mhase.

Officials confirmed that construction or repairs are underway across various segments, with 20 to 25 villages already covered under approved works.

“Link roads connecting major highways are being prioritised,” a senior PMRDA official was quoted as saying by TOI. Most of the new roads will be constructed using cement concrete for increased durability.

Each road will feature stormwater drains and underground utility ducts to avoid future excavation and ensure uninterrupted traffic flow during the monsoon season.

The width of new roads have been finalized considering future traffic requirements in mind. The shifting of utilities and the technical surveys are simultaneously being carried out to avoid delay.

In the first phase, efforts are focused on developing the existing roadways that form the backbone of the PMRDA's regional development plan. The project is being implemented in phases, with a focus on accelerating the process of land acquisition.

The road system within is meant to serve as an auxiliary road system, whose aim is to decongest downtown arterial roads and minimize the travel time of daily commuters as well as freight trucks.

"The aim is to reduce pressure on primary corridors by creating seamless links between them. This will also help people living in peripheral areas travel more efficiently," the official explained.

Spanning 83.1 km, the inner ring road will provide circular connectivity to major hubs like Lohegaon airport, Hinjewadi IT Park, and Chakan MIDC, diverting heavy traffic from Pune’s core areas.
