What began as a reported acid attack on a 20-year-old Delhi University student has unravelled into a web of deceit involving rape, blackmail, and a long-running property dispute, the Hindustan Times reported.
Police revealed that the student’s father staged the incident to frame three men with whom he had personal and legal conflicts.
“He admitted that the entire case was orchestrated to settle scores,” a senior police officer was quoted as saying.
The alleged assault took place on Sunday (26 October), when the woman claimed that three bikers threw acid on her near her college.
Special commissioner of police (law and order) Ravindra Singh Yadav on Tuesday said that after finding multiple contradictions between the woman's statement and CCTV footage, police believed that the DU student used a toilet cleaner from her home to injure herself and stage the alleged acid attack, HT reported.
During questioning, the woman admitted that her father had attacked her with the strong toilet cleaner, while her brother helped stage the scene.
The father, arrested from Sangam Vihar, was also accused of raping and blackmailing the wife of one of the men initially framed in the alleged attack.
The woman had filed a complaint on 24 October, accusing him of sexually assaulting her between 2021 and 2024 while she worked at his factory.
Police said the father planned the fake attack days after the rape complaint to implicate the survivor’s husband and his relatives, two of whom were also involved in a long-standing property dispute with his family.
All three men accused in the “acid attack” were verified to be elsewhere at the time of the alleged incident.
Police are now reviewing further evidence and questioning additional witnesses.
