The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday (6 December) approved the Rithala-Narela-Nathupur (Kundli) corridor under Delhi Metro's Phase IV project.

This 26.463 km stretch is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Delhi and Haryana.

The corridor is expected to be completed within four years from the date of its sanction.

The project, estimated to cost Rs 6,230 crore, will be implemented by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC).

DMRC operates as a 50:50 Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) between the Government of India and the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

The corridor will extend the existing Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda) - Rithala (Red Line) corridor and enhance connectivity in north-west Delhi, covering regions like Narela, Bawana, and parts of Rohini.

This entire stretch will comprise of 21 stations and all the stations of this corridor will be elevated.

Upon completion, the Rithala-Narela-Nathupur corridor will also link Shaheed Sthal New Bus Adda station in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, to Nathupur in Haryana via Delhi.

This integration will greatly enhance connectivity across the National Capital Region (NCR).

As part of Phase IV, the new corridor will expand Delhi Metro's network in NCR.

This Red Line extension also aims to ease road congestion and curb vehicular pollution.

"The stations, which shall come up on this corridor are: Rithala, Rohini Sector 25, Rohini Sector 26, Rohini Sector 31, Rohini Sector 32, Rohini Sector 36, Barwala, Rohini Sector 35, Rohini Sector 34, Bawana Industrial Area - 1 Sector 3,4, Bawana Industrial Area - 1 Sector 1,2, Bawana JJ Colony, Sanoth, New Sanoth, Depot Station, Bhorgarh village, Anaj Mandi Narela, Narela DDA Sports Complex, Narela, Narela Sector 5, Kundli and Nathpur," the government said in a statement.

This corridor will mark Delhi Metro's fourth extension into Haryana, adding to its current operations in Gurugram, Ballabhgarh, and Bahadurgarh.

Delhi Metro Phase IV construction, which includes three priority corridors spanning 65.202 km and 45 stations, is over 56 per cent complete.

The Phase-IV (3 Priority) corridors are likely to be completed in stages by March 2026.

In addition, two more corridors, comprising 20.762 kilometres, have also been approved and are in the pre-tendering stages.

Today, the Delhi Metro, which is the largest metro network in India and one of the largest in the world, caters to on average of 64 lakh passenger journeys.

A total of 12 metro lines of about 392 km with 288 stations are being operated by DMRC in Delhi and NCR at present.
