A day after Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena directed the Delhi Police Commissioner to take "strict action" against "illegal Bangladeshi immigrants" in the Capital, the police launched a crackdown on such individuals on Wednesday (11 December).
The drive was conducted in multiple areas of the city, including Kalindi Kunj, Uttam Nagar, Shaheen Bagh, and Jamia Nagar, where officers inspected documents of residents in slums, footpaths, and unauthorised colonies, according to the police.
"Some of them who did not have proper documents have been brought to the police station for questioning… If they are found to be illegal immigrants, they would be deported," said a police official.
“We are visiting colonies, settlements, and any other area where we suspect illegal migrants are residing. We are checking their documents, even those whose documents are from Assam or states close to Bangladesh… we are cross-verifying the details. Those found illegally residing will be booked under the Foreigners Act and deported,” the official added.
The police clarified that this was a routine exercise they follow, noting that illegal migrants – whether from Nigeria or Bangladesh – have been deported in the past.
The action follows a meeting on Saturday between a delegation of ulemas (clerics) and Muslim leaders from Hazrat Nizamuddin and Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, during which concerns were raised about the treatment of minority communities in Bangladesh and the need for strict action against infiltrators in the city. The L-G office issued a note regarding the meeting.
Additionally, the Chief Secretary has been directed to provide a time-bound response, including weekly progress reports on the matter.
