The Delhi government is set to deploy 900 electric buses in the coming months as it phases out 5,000 out of 7,500 buses from the city's public transport fleet this year, Transport Minister Pankaj Singh announced and reported by TOI.
Singh stated that the government has placed orders for thousands of new buses to maintain adequate public transport services.
“We are upgrading charging infrastructure in depots, there will not be a shortage of buses and from 1 April onwards. There will be 900 new electric buses, and every week it will increase depending on the demand,” he was quoted as saying by TOI.
With approximately 2,000 cluster buses and 3,000 DTC buses set to retire this year, electric buses will gradually replace CNG buses in Delhi’s fleet.
Transport department officials acknowledged challenges in replacing CNG buses with electric ones. Manufacturing delays and mandatory safety tests may slow the rollout.
Additionally, bus manufacturers are hesitant about annual maintenance contracts due to the high wear and tear of government buses.
However, Singh assured that measures are in place to prevent any shortage. He said that he had personally held meetings with manufacturers and operators, and had directed them to ensure timely supply.
