Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi is set to temporarily close Terminal 2 (T2) for a period of four to five months from April as part of a major expansion project, according to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL).
Alongside the terminal closure, one of the airport’s runways will also be shut for critical upgrades, news agency PTI reported.
DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar emphasised that the closure is essential to facilitate infrastructure enhancements aimed at increasing capacity.
With T2 currently handling around 15 million passengers, its operations will be shifted to Terminal 1 (T1), which is undergoing final upgrade works and is expected to resume full-scale operations by 15 March.
In a strategic move to accommodate the growing number of international passengers, a section of Terminal 3 (T3) will be repurposed.
Specifically, Pier C, which currently serves domestic flights, will be converted into an international wing.
This will expand T3’s international handling capacity to 32 million passengers, aligning with projected demand over the next four to five years.
Jaipuriar acknowledged that T3 is already operating beyond its original design capacity.
Originally designed for 34 million international passengers, it is currently managing approximately 45 million.
Additionally, one of IGIA’s runways will undergo a significant upgrade to install an Instrument Landing System (ILS), ensuring compliance with CAT III B standards.
This enhancement is crucial to maintaining seamless flight operations during periods of low visibility, particularly in winter when dense fog frequently disrupts schedules.
Officials confirmed that the runway upgrade would be completed before the onset of winter to minimise operational disruptions.
