Delhi's Najafgarh Drain To Be Transformed Into Green Mobility And Sewage-Free Corridor: Minister Parvesh Verma

Delhi is set to witness a major infrastructural overhaul with a Rs 600 crore road development project planned along the Najafgarh Drain, also known as the Sahibi River.

The initiative aims to enhance regional connectivity and rejuvenate one of the capital’s most neglected stretches, according to TOI report.

As part of the project, 60.77 km of new roads will be constructed. A two-lane road will come up on the left bank from Jhatikra Bridge to Chhawla Bridge (5.94 km), and another two-lane stretch will run along both banks from Chhawla Bridge to Basaidarapur Bridge (54.83 km).

The upgraded corridor will link to Inner and Outer Ring Roads, Pankha Road, Dwarka Expressway, Najafgarh Road, and other arterial routes leading to the airport.

"This will not only improve connectivity in the region but also contribute to the city's larger goal of making public spaces more accessible and environmentally friendly," said Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Verma.

He added that work will soon commence and include infrastructure upgrades like street furniture, public toilets, electrical fittings, signage, and boundary walls.

The vision extends beyond road building. The idea is to make a green corridor along the way, Verma noted. A 50 acre neglected plot in Uttam Nagar's Vipin Garden will also be developed into a public park.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is intensifying efforts to prevent untreated sewage from entering the Yamuna.

It has begun tapping 11 of 22 major drains, with plans to construct sewage treatment plants (STPs) and decentralised STPs (DSTPs) at critical points, including sub-drains of Najafgarh and Shahdara.

“If sewage is still detected… a trap will be constructed,” said a DJB official, indicating firm action on pollution control.
