With the majority of flight operations now shifted to the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) at Pune International Airport (PIA), Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol revealed that discussions are in progress regarding the demolition of the old terminal.
He made this announcement during the inauguration of the Digi Yatra service on Saturday (8 February).
The Digi Yatra service has been launched nearly a year after the NITB's inauguration.
The event was attended by Minister Mohol, BJP Working President MLA Ravindra Chavan, State General Secretary Rajesh Pandey, and key officials from Pune Airport.
The NITB, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated in March 2024, covers 22,000 square metres and is designed to handle ten million passengers annually.
However, the implementation of the Digi Yatra facility faced delays over the past year due to technical challenges and pending approvals.
Minister Mohol stated that the newly launched service would ease travel for passengers departing from Pune, enhancing the boarding experience.
“Digi Yatra is available at 24 airports across the country, and so far, 4 crore (70 percent) passengers have benefited from it. With this facility, the time required for document security checks at the airport has been completely eliminated, allowing passengers to enter the airport seamlessly. This service has been launched using cutting-edge technology and will soon be expanded to other airports," Mohol was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
Speaking about the renovation of the old terminal, Mohol noted that nearly 80 percent of domestic and international flights now operate from the NITB.
He added that the old terminal will be demolished within a few months.
“While discussions on the demolition are ongoing with the concerned authorities, the old terminal will also be redeveloped in a lavish and modern way, similar to the new one,” Mohol was quoted as saying by IE.
