The eagerly awaited biopic of Diljit Dosanjh, 'Punjab 95', will not be premiering on 7 February. Earlier, Dosanjh had said that the movie would be released 'internationally only.'
This was after the Censor Board proposed 120 cuts to the film. Releasing the teaser of the movie, Dosanjh said last week, 'Full movie, no cuts."
The film, which is centered around the life of Sikh human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra who went missing in 1995, has had its release date postponed.
The latest update was posted by Dosanjh on his Instagram stories, which read, "We are very sorry, and it pains us to inform you that the movie Punjab 95 will not release on 7th Feb due to circumstances beyond our control."
The movie, under the direction of Honey Trehan and the production by Ronnie Screwvala, narrates the tale of Khalra, a figure renowned for exposing human rights abuses during the period of militancy in Punjab.
Khalra revealed the illicit killings of Sikh men by the Punjab Police amidst the militancy in the late 90s. Khalra was abducted in 1995 and subsequently killed.
His death led to the conviction of six Punjab Police officers who were found guilty of his kidnapping and murder. Khalra's wife Paramjit Kaur had approved the biopic earlier.
Responding to the Censor Board's cuts to the film, she had stated that the biopic of her husband's life was produced with the family's approval and should be premiered without any alterations.
His wife revealed that her family had given director Honey Trehan the green light to make the film featuring Dosanjh as Khalra after reading the script four years prior.
She added that they had viewed the movie in 2022 and were pleased with how it represented Khalra's fight for human rights during a pivotal time in Punjab's history.
In the meantime, Diljit will make his next appearance in Border 2. The movie features Ahan Shetty, Sunny Deol, and Varun Dhawan in the primary roles.
