United States President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday (9 November) won his sixth battleground state of the 2024 election, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in Nevada.

Trump was declared winner by The Associated Press after concluding that the remaining uncounted ballots from key Democratic areas were insufficient to bridge Trump’s 46,000-vote lead over Harris.

Trump secured his second term as US President on Wednesday, with Wisconsin giving him the required electoral college votes to cross the mark of 270 electoral votes necessary for victory.

Nevada’s six additional electoral votes increased his total to 301, making him the winner in six of the seven battleground states, with only Arizona still uncalled.

Nevada has repeatedly voted for the Democratic presidential nominee since 1992, except the two elections when George W Bush ran for president as a Republican in 2000, and 2004.

President Joe Biden had won Nevada by a 2.4 percent margin in 2020, fueling Democratic hopes of repeating that success in 2024, though this did not materialise.

With the results, Republicans surprised many by beating Democrats in Nevada this election.
