A first information report (FIR) has been registered against multiple students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) for organising a march on the campus in support of Palestine and against Israel.
The march took place on Sunday (8 October) evening in response to Israel's offensive against Palestinians following missile attacks by Hamas militants.
The FIR has named five protesters, but it is stated that additional individuals who have not yet been identified, have also been booked.
During the protest, the students raised slogans and carried posters and banners expressing solidarity with Palestine and AMU's support for the cause.
The Aligarh police have charged the students under sections 153A, 188, and 505 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
These sections pertain to promoting enmity between different groups, deliberate disobedience of orders by public servants, and publishing or circulating statements containing rumors, respectively. The FIR was filed at the Civil Lines police station on Monday (9 October).
According to the Times of India, Mirgank Shekhar Pathak, the SP (city), has commented on the incident at the university, stating that several individuals participated in the protest march without permission from authorities and chanted "inflammatory slogans".
Pathak confirmed that a case has been registered against them under the relevant sections of the IPC.
