BJP MPs on Monday (28 July) held massive protests outside Parliament, declaring, “We won’t tolerate insult to a female MP,” in response to remarks by cleric Maulana Sajid Rashidi about Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav, reported NDTV.
Rashidi had criticised Dimple Yadav, the Lok Sabha MP from Mainpuri, for visiting a mosque in Delhi without covering her head. He described a photo from the meeting—attended by Dimple Yadav, her husband Akhilesh Yadav, and other senior SP leaders—as “embarrassing,” and added: “Look at her (Dimple Yadav’s) back. It is naked.” He also pointed out that Samajwadi MP Iqra Hasan had covered her head.
Samajwadi leader Pravesh Yadav filed a police complaint in Lucknow, arguing the remarks insulted not only Dimple Yadav but all women. “This has not only hurt the dignity of a woman, but every woman in society is affected by such a comment. Such indecent and anti‑women remarks made from a public platform like a TV channel can disrupt social harmony,” he stated.
Acting on the complaint, Lucknow police registered a case late Sunday (27 July) under Sections 79 (outraging modesty of women), 196 (promoting enmity between groups), 299 (outraging religious sentiments), and 352 (intentional insult) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
