Former RBI governor Shaktikanta Das has been appointed the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to an official government notification on Saturday (22 February), NDTV reported.
According to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet notification, Das' appointment will be "co-terminus with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders, whichever is earlier".
Das took charge as the RBI Governor in December 2018 and led the central bank for six years.
With a career spanning four decades, he has held important positions in the central and state governments in the areas of finance, taxation, industries, infrastructure, etc.
During the COVID-19 crisis, Das played a pivotal role in introducing measures aimed at fostering economic growth and reinforcing India's financial stability as the head of the RBI.
Under his leadership at RBI, Das steered the central bank's pandemic response through several conventional, unconventional, and innovative policy measures spanning monetary policy, liquidity conditions, and regulatory policies to preserve financial stability while mitigating the adverse effects of the pandemic on the economy, NDTV reported.
Further, the tenure of the government think tank NITI Aayog's CEO BVR Subrahmanyam has also been extended by a year, beginning from 24 February 2025.
A retired IAS officer from the 1987 batch, Subrahmanyam was initially appointed to the position for a two-year term in February 2023.
