Mumbai Police have claimedd that gangster Anmol Bishnoi is the main conspirator in the murder of former MLA Baba Siddique, who was shot dead in Bandra on 12 October.
According to the police, Bishnoi, who was detained in US last month, orchestrated the crime by issuing instructions to other accused through a communication app.
Last week, the Mumbai Crime Branch invoked charges under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against 26 individuals, including the alleged shooter, Shiv Kumar Gautam, Indian Express reported.
On Tuesday, all accused were produced before a special court, where the police sought the custody of eight suspects, including Gautam, to further probe the case.
Investigators aim to examine how Bishnoi communicated with the accused, traced the Rs 4.5 lakh allegedly distributed among them, and identified the source of the funds.
They also seek to interrogate the accused involved in procuring weapons, conducting recce, arranging logistics including stay of the shooters and other crucial parts of the conspiracy.
Defense lawyers, including Ajinkya Mirkal, opposed the police custody plea, arguing that the accused had already been in custody for over a month and that no new grounds were presented to justify an extension.
Despite this, Special Judge A M Patil granted police custody for eight of the accused until 7 December, while the remaining 18 were remanded to judicial custody for two weeks.
