Google announced, on 19 October, its plans to commence manufacturing Pixel smartphones in India, aligning with the country's aspirations to establish itself as a global manufacturing hub, as reported by Livemint.
Following the recent unveiling of its new line of Pixel smartphones, the company is taking this significant step.
Rick Osterloh, Google's Senior Vice President of Devices and Services, revealed that the Pixel 8 will be the inaugural device produced in India.
The endeavour involves collaborations with both local and international manufacturers, with the first batch of devices expected to hit the market in 2024.
This move comes as Apple, one of Google's competitors, is also expanding its production of flagship iPhone devices in India, signaling a growing trend of major tech companies bolstering local manufacturing operations.
India has set ambitious targets for becoming a prominent global destination for electronics manufacturing, aiming to achieve $300 billion in electronics production by 2025-26.
Google's decision to manufacture Pixel smartphones in India is a significant step toward supporting these goals, furthering the nation's reputation as a manufacturing hub.

Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
