Gorakhpur Airport is set for a major infrastructure overhaul, with a new terminal building and runway expansion on the horizon, Hindustan Times reported.

On Tuesday (24 June), a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the Indian Air Force, and the Government of Uttar Pradesh to develop a new civil enclave at the airport.

As part of the agreement, the Indian Air Force will hand over 44 acres of land for the construction of a modern terminal and extension of the runway.

In exchange, the Uttar Pradesh government will provide an equivalent parcel of land to the IAF at another location.

According to Airport director R K Prasher, the land exchange would pave the way for the airport’s infrastructure upgrade. He added that construction work is expected to begin after the monsoon.

The expansion is part of a Rs 900 crore central government-backed initiative aimed at transforming the airport into a high-tech aviation hub that meets international standards.

Though the airport is owned by the Indian Air Force, its civil operations are currently managed by the AAI.

The upgraded facility will include advanced navigation systems like DVOR (Doppler VHF Omnidirectional Range) and DME (Distance Measuring Equipment), allowing for all-weather flight operations.

The new terminal will be significantly larger and will have the capacity to handle up to 10 aircraft simultaneously.

In the financial year 2024–25, the airport handled around 8.7 lakh passengers and recorded over 5,600 aircraft movements.
