The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) Ltd has submitted Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for metro rail projects in Vadodara and Rajkot, alongside expansion plans for the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network, to the Union government for final approval, Times of India reported.

The move marks a significant step forward in Gujarat’s urban transport infrastructure development, with all four projects having already received approval from the state government.

“DPR for metro rail services for the municipal corporations of Vadodara and Rajkot, along with the expansion of the Ahmedabad metro rail, have been sent to the Union govt. The Gujarat govt is expecting the Union govt to bear 50 per cent of the cost of these projects. Once the Centre sanctions the funds, the state govt will begin work on the projects, as the DPRs for all four have already been prepared,” a senior GMRC official was quoted as saying by ToI.

The Vadodara Metro is planned as a 40 km network with an estimated cost of Rs 11,000 crore. It will connect key industrial zones, commercial hubs such as Alkapuri and Akota, and the city’s airport.

Another corridor will connect the old city to the GSFC industrial area via the railway station.

Rajkot’s proposed 38 km metro rail system is pegged at Rs 10,000 crore and will serve newly developed zones, while linking the railway station and busy city centres.

Both cities will have two corridors each, combining elevated stretches with select underground segments to address urban constraints.

In addition to these, the GMRC has also put forward plans for extending Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro services into GIFT City, and a new route connecting Koteshwar to Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, enhancing inter-city and intra-city connectivity.
