The Gurugram Metro announced that it is set to connect Millennium City Centre to Cyber Hub with a top speed of 90 kilometres per hour with trains arriving every five minutes during peak hours.
The high-frequency service aims to accommodate the city's growing commuter base across the 28. 5-kilometre elevated corridor.
Initially, the metro will operate three-coach trains carrying 975 passengers each.
As ridership increases, GMRL plans to upgrade to six-coach trains with a capacity of 2,004 passengers.
The entire infrastructure, including platforms, signalling systems, the depot, and power supply, has been designed to support this future expansion.
Officials stated that the stainless steel coaches will measure 3. 9 metres in height and 2. 9 metres in width, with 26 trains of three coaches each (totalling 78 coaches) to be procured in the first phase.
The project has witnessed a sharp cost escalation for its metro depot near Marble Market in Sector 33.
The depot's revised estimate now stands at ₹332 crore, up from the initial Rs 110 crore.
The facility will span 22. 86 hectares, four times the originally planned 5. 5 hectares, and include 18 kilometres of tracks instead of six.
Meanwhile, deliberations continue over constructing an underground metro in Old Gurugram as part of the second phase.
A senior GMRL official noted that whilst an underground system would resolve several urban challenges, the proposal could delay the second phase by 18 months.
Fresh surveys, geotechnical studies, and route assessments would be required, substantially increasing project costs.
The official emphasised that the decision rests with state and central authorities, though construction challenges during the build phase would be offset by long-term benefits for the city's connectivity.
