The Purandar International Airport project in Pune has taken an important step forward, with consent documents received from over 1,100 farmers for acquisition of the required land, The Indian Express reported.

Officials said that within just six days of the process opening, more than 1,100 farmers have submitted documents, covering close to 50 per cent of the 2,800 acres needed.

Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi announced that landowners may submit their consent either at the collector’s office or at the Purandar sub-divisional office.

As part of the compensation package, those who part with land willingly will not only receive monetary payment but would be given 10 per cent of the land acquired within Aerocity as developed land parcels.

This provision has been designed to speed up the acquisition process.

According to the officials, land parcels over 1,300 gats are to be acquired for the airport’s construction. Gat refers to land parcels that have multiple ownership. The 7/12 land records would provide the exact number of land owners whose consent has been obtained.

Over the past year, the administration has held special drives to ensure ownership documents are current, while also deploying dedicated teams to address farmers’ concerns and reduce resistance.

Authorities said that while land is being acquired from seven villages, much of it lies in Pargaon, where opposition to the project had been strongest.

Despite protests, officials are optimistic that with half the land already secured, the remainder will follow more smoothly.

Demand for a new international airport in Pune has been longstanding, with the existing Lohegaon facility running at capacity and constrained by Air Force restrictions.

The Purandar site was approved in 2016 under then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, but the project stalled before regaining momentum after his return to office.
