At least six people died and several others were injured in a stampede at Mansa Devi temple route in Uttarakhand's Haridwar on Sunday (27 July) after massive crowd gathered occurred on the staircase leading to the popular shrine.

Confirming the incident to news agency ANI, Garhwal Division Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey said he is on his way to the temple.

"Six people have died in a stampede after a huge crowd gathered at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar. I am leaving for the spot. A detailed report of the incident is awaited," Pandey was quoted as saying by ANI.

As soon as information about the stampede came in, police and administrative teams were rushed to the site.

Rescue and relief operations are underway, with the injured being taken to the hospital for treatment.

According to preliminary reports, the stampede may have been triggered after high-voltage power line suddenly snapped and came down, leading to sudden chaos and panic among devotees.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed grief on the incident and said that he is in constant contact with the local administration.

"It is extremely distressing to receive news of a stampede on the route to the Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar. Uttarakhand SDRF, local police, and other rescue teams have reached the site and are engaged in relief and rescue operations. I am in constant contact with the local administration regarding this matter, and the situation is being closely monitored. I pray to Mother Goddess for the safety and well-being of all devotees," he said in a post on X.
