In a shocking turn of events, a Haryana Police officer probing corruption allegations against the late Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Y Puran Kumar died by suicide on Tuesday (14 October), leaving behind a three-page note and video message accusing the deceased ADGP of corruption.
Police officials confirmed that before taking the extreme step, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sandeep Lather posted with the cyber cell of Rohtak Police, recorded a video accusing deceased senior police officer Y Puran Kumar of corruption, NDTV reported.
The ASI alleged that Kumar took his own life out of fear of arrest and accused him of hijacking the system by exploiting casteism.
Lather claimed that after YS Puran Kumar was assigned to the Rohtak range, he began replacing honest police officers with corrupt ones.
"These people blocked files, called petitioners and mentally tortured them by asking for money. Women police personnel were sexually exploited in exchange for transfers," he alleged.
In the same video, Lather extended support to former Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarnia, calling him an honest officer who had been transferred shortly after the incident.
Bijarnia’s removal came in the wake of the death of Y Puran Kumar, who had allegedly shot himself at his government residence in Chandigarh last Tuesday.
Kumar’s death had sent shockwaves through the state administration after he reportedly left behind a note naming 16 senior IAS and IPS officers, accusing them of harassment and casteism and holding them responsible for his decision to end his life.
Following the incident, the Haryana government placed the Director General of Police Shatrujeet Singh Kapur on leave and replaced SP Bijraniya with Surinder Singh Bhoria.
The case has since taken a new turn just hours after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi met with Puran Kumar’s wife and daughters, assuring them of support amid the ongoing investigation.
