Haryana Director General of Police Shatrujeet Kapur has been sent on leave by the state government days after being named in a first information report related to the death of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, reported PTI.
The 52 year old officer allegedly shot himself dead at his Sector 11 residence in Chandigarh on 7 October.
Chief Minister's Media Adviser Rajeev Jaitley confirmed that Kapur has been placed on leave, marking a significant development in the case that has triggered political and bureaucratic upheaval.
In an eight-page 'final note' purportedly left behind by Kumar, he accused eight senior cops, including Haryana director general of police Shatrujeet Kapur, of blatant caste-based discrimination, targeted mental harassment, public humiliation and atrocities.
The complaint was filed by Kumar's wife, Amneet P Kumar, a senior IAS officer, demanding action against Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya.
An FIR was registered at Sector 11 police station under Sections 108 and 3(1)(r) pertaining to Schedule Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
A 31 member committee formed to seek justice for the deceased officer's family gave a 48 hour ultimatum to remove state police chief Shatrujeet Kapur from his post.
The officer's family has refused to give its consent for a post-mortem examination and cremation of the body until its demands are addressed.
Bijarniya was transferred as the Rohtak SP, whilst the BJP government in Haryana is seen as attempting to send a strong signal to the community by replacing the DGP.
Shatrujeet Kapur, a 1990-batch IPS officer, took charge as Haryana DGP on 16 August 2023, and had already completed his two-year tenure.
Chief Minister Saini convened a meeting with top officials, including State Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, at his official residence in Chandigarh to discuss the development.
