Kurukshetra MP Nayab Saini is set to become Haryana Chief Minister as Manohar Lal Khattar resigned earlier today (12 March).
Saini was chosen as Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) leader for the Haryana Legislative Assembly in the MLAs' meeting.
Saini hails from the Other Backward Class (OBC) community and is another non-Jat CM of Haryana after Khattar.
With Khattar relieved of his CM responsibility, he is likely to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, most probably from Karnal.
Meanwhile, Saini will not have to contest by-polls to become an MLA as only six months remain before the state Assembly elections.
Saini is considered to be close to Khattar. However, Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij is said to be disappointed with this appointment.
Before becoming an MP, Saini was an MLA from Naraingarh and served as a Minister of State in the Haryana government for four years.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
