Haryana’s energy, Transport and Labour Minister Anil Vij met Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar in New Delhi on Saturday (14 June), pressing for the introduction of a Metro rail line between Ambala and Chandigarh, reported Times of India.
Highlighting the region’s growing transport strain, Vij noted that Chandigarh is a UT and serves as a capital of both Punjab and Haryana, making it a major transit hub.
He said the Ambala–Chandigarh road remained packed throughout the day, causing daily hardship to commuters.
Given that Chandigarh is not only a UT but also a shared capital, hundreds of people commute daily between the two cities.
Therefore, there is a pressing need for a Metro service in this region, Vij told reporters.
The Union minister reportedly gave assured Vij of prompt action on the request. The matter was discussed in detail during their meeting.
Vij stressed that he brought up the issue as a representative of the people.
Addressing media queries on summer power cuts, Vij cited inadequate transformer capacity as a key issue.
He said most transformers have now been upgraded statewide.
