Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has said that state cabinet has approved the Haryana Scheduled Caste Commission Report on Saturday (17 August).

Saini added that a 20 per cent quota in government jobs will be reserved for scheduled castes in the state.

During a press conference in Chandigarh on Saturday, Saini stated, "Today, the Haryana Scheduled Caste Commission Report was accepted by the cabinet. A 20 per cent quota in government jobs will be reserved for scheduled castes, with the commission recommending that 10 per cent of this quota be allocated to the deprived scheduled castes," ANI reported.

Saini also said that the rule would be implemented after the assembly elections, in accordance with the code of conduct set by the Election Commission of India.

Saini's announcement comes after the Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Friday (16 August) announced the assembly election dates.

Haryana will go to the polls in a single-phase election on 1 October, with the counting of votes slated for 4 October.

At the press conference, Saini also expressed confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s readiness for the upcoming elections, asserting that the party is poised to form the government in Haryana for a third consecutive term.

Earlier on 1 August, the Supreme Court in a landmark judgment held that sub-classification of Scheduled Castes is permissible to grant separate quotas for more backwards within the SC/ST categories.
