19-year-old Aman Khan has been arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police for raping a seven-year-old girl in a Hathras district village late on Saturday (15 March) night, Indian Express reported.

The incident sparked retaliation from a crowd that subsequently damaged a mosque. The police then heavily guarded the mosque and got its broken gate and other parts repaired by Sunday evening, Jagran reported.

Notably, Khan had earlier too tried to rape a five-year-old girl in December 2018 along with his two friends. Since he was a minor at that time, he, along with his friends, was sent to the juvenile rehabilitation centre.

After spending four years there, Khan came out of the centre and started working in a Dhaba. According to Jagran, Khan studied at a Hathras madrasa for two years and had alleged that the maulvi had motivated him to commit the crime.

When Khan repeated what he had failed to do five years ago due to the intervention of villagers, the locals expressed their anger by vandalising a mosque. They also alleged that Khan tried to kill the minor girl by drowning her but fled the scene when the locals arrived.

“The minor girl’s condition is serious. She was referred to a hospital in Aligarh on Sunday morning. Adequate police and PAC personnel have been deployed in the village as well as the mosque to ensure that no untoward incident takes place," Hathras SP Chiranjeev Nath Sinha was quoted as saying.

According to the police, the young girl was in a local market with other children when the accused enticed her to a secluded area and sexually assaulted her. The girl was rescued by villagers.
