Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced Dibrugarh’s elevation to a full-fledged city and the state’s second capital, as reported by ANI. The decision, aimed at enhancing Ease of Living and connectivity, reflects the government’s commitment to holistic development.
“Our announcement to upgrade Dibrugarh as a full-fledged city and transform it as Assam's second capital is backed by solid groundwork to ensure Ease of Living and connectivity,” Sarma stated in a post on X.
Marking a significant infrastructure push, the Chief Minister laid foundation stones for four major flyovers in Dibrugarh. Spanning a total of 4.4 km and costing Rs 377 crore, these projects aim to improve urban mobility and connectivity within the region.
In a Republic Day message, Sarma highlighted Dibrugarh’s transformation over the years. “Once shrouded in curfews and boycotts, Dibrugarh today stands proudly as the centre of Republic Day celebrations in Assam. This remarkable journey reflects the strength of the world's greatest Republic Bharat,” he posted.
The announcement follows Sarma’s recent two-nation trip to Japan for the Advantage Assam Roadshow, where he engaged with industry leaders to attract investments.
During his visit, he met Takeshi Okubo of Tokyo Electron, a semiconductor industry leader, inviting the company to expand its base in Assam's Electronic City.
The Chief Minister also met Yoshiaki Asakura, Vice President of Yokogawa Electric Corporation, discussing their ongoing projects with Numaligarh Refinery Ltd and Indian Oil. Sarma encouraged the company to expand its operations to bolster Assam’s energy sector.
Additionally, Sarma held discussions with Akiko Ikuina, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Government of Japan, exploring opportunities for Indian and Assamese youth in Japan.
