How Integrating E-Shram Portal With Gati Shakti Can Aid Smarter Workforce Allocation And Reduce Project Delays

The government is set to integrate the e-Shram portal, which hosts data on over 300 million unorganised workers, with the Gati Shakti portal to streamline logistics planning and boost local employment opportunities.

"Once the extensive database of unorganised workers is linked with the Gati Shakti portal, nodal agencies can readily access details on the availability of skilled and unskilled workers, aiding them in workforce planning. While many registered workers are in agriculture, numerous skilled tradespeople, including masons, carpenters, and plumbers, are also listed," an official noted to The Business Standard.

This integration aims to address skill gaps and help agencies plan more effectively, potentially mitigating project delays and cost overruns caused by shortages of skilled workers in specific locations.

The e-Shram portal, launched in August 2021, serves as a national database of unorganised workers, capturing details such as name, occupation, address, education, and skill level. Currently, it includes information on over 303 million workers across 400+ occupations.

In contrast, the Gati Shakti portal provides extensive data on India’s social and economic infrastructure. Established three years ago, it unifies ministries like railways, highways, shipping, and coal, fostering coordinated planning and execution of infrastructure projects.

Currently, only state and central government ministries and departments have access to the Gati Shakti portal. However, a decision on allowing limited data access to private sector players is expected soon.

"Even private sector entities with access to the masterplan portal will find this integration advantageous, as they too face challenges in finding skilled workers in certain areas. With e-Shram data, workforce planning will be more efficient," the official added.

By linking the vast database of unorganised workers with the national infrastructure masterplan, the government aims to optimize resource allocation, reduce project delays, and stimulate local employment.
