GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) announced on Wednesday (17 Feb) the successful installation and commissioning of cutting-edge navigational infrastructure at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), marking a major milestone in the facility's operational capabilities and safety measures.

The airport has completed the installation and commissioning of a Category II Instrument Landing System (ILS) and its associated runway lighting system on the primary runway.

This sophisticated system, now operational, ensures that aircraft can safely land in visibility conditions as low as 300 meters (RVR), significantly enhancing safety during adverse weather.

The Category II ILS represents a considerable upgrade from the existing Category I systems, offering pilots precise guidance through accurate radio signals and advanced ground lighting systems. This enhanced capability is crucial during foggy conditions or when visual references are severely limited, ensuring safe landings in challenging environments.

The new systems are expected to reduce disruptions caused by low visibility, minimizing inconvenience for passengers and boosting operational safety. These upgrades comply with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and have received all necessary certifications from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

In addition, GHIAL has received approval from the DGCA to upgrade the secondary runway to Category I status. This upgrade will enable the airport to operate with an RVR of 550 meters during contingency situations on the primary runway.

This upgrade highlights the airport's commitment to maintaining its leading position in Indian aviation and ensuring reliable service for both domestic and international flights. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport has positioned Hyderabad as a prominent aviation hub, with plans for expansion to accommodate the growing number of passengers.

Passenger traffic at RGIA has seen remarkable growth, rising from 8 million in FY2021 to 12.4 million in FY2022, 21 million in FY2023, and an expected 25 million in FY2024. This impressive growth reflects a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 45.6 per cent, driven by Hyderabad's booming economy and increasing disposable incomes.

As Hyderabad continues to evolve, it is poised to become a major hub for international travel, offering immense opportunities for airlines and travelers alike. The city’s strategic investments in infrastructure, coupled with its growing international connectivity, make it an attractive destination for long-haul flights, further solidifying its position as a key player in the global travel market.
