Hyderbad Metro's expansion plans are advancing rapidly with the detailed project reports (DPR) for Medchal, Shamirpet, and Shamshabad Airport-Future City corridors expected to be submitted by the end of March.
Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) managing director N V S Reddy announced on Sunday (16 February) that DPRs for three key corridors—Medchal, Shamirpet, and the Shamshabad Airport-Future City route—will be submitted to the government by the end of March, reported The New Indian Express.
He further stated that essential traffic surveys and soil testing for these routes are on track for completion by February.
Survey and investigative work for the JBS-Medchal (24 km) and JBS-Shamirpet (21 km) corridors is progressing rapidly.
Reddy highlighted that three major studies are fundamental for DPR preparation: traffic surveys, soil testing (geotechnical investigation), and an environmental impact assessment (EIA).
Traffic surveys will evaluate crucial aspects such as daily commuter volumes, future travel projections, vehicle movement at junctions, pedestrian footfall, vehicular travel times, and the percentage of passengers likely to shift to Metro services.
Meanwhile, the EIA study will assess air quality, particulate matter levels, noise pollution sources, water resources, biodiversity, and the overall impact on local communities.
Soil testing is another critical component, involving a detailed examination of soil and subsoil conditions, load-bearing capacity assessments, groundwater levels, and seismic risk analysis.
Reddy stated that these tests are crucial in ensuring the stability and durability of Metro pillars, stations, and other structures.
With some studies already conducted by HMDA and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Metro authorities are now focusing on testing soil at 25 locations along the JBS-Medchal route and 19 along the JBS-Shamirpet corridor.
So far, 14 tests have been completed in Medchal and 11 in Shamirpet, with all tests expected to conclude by the end of the month.
