Hyderabad Airport Metro Ltd (HAML) conducted a detailed inspection of the Metro Rail corridors to Medchal and Shamirpet on Sunday (19 January), focusing on addressing technical challenges in the proposed alignment.

The Metro Rail project in Hyderabad is tackling significant engineering challenges, particularly on the Paradise to Bowenpally corridor. The assessment aimed to streamline the project’s execution and ensure optimal connectivity.

The steep road curvature near the airport boundary and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority's (HMDA) plan for an elevated corridor under the Begumpet Airport runway, requiring a 600-metre tunnel, have added to the complexity.

To address these issues, the state government has proposed combining two Metro corridors—the Paradise-Medchal and JBS-Shamirpet lines—at the Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) before splitting them later. This approach aims to simplify construction and reduce complications.

The inspection conducted by HAML Director NVS Reddy explored the feasibility of this combined alignment, focusing on routes in the Cantonment area.

During the survey, it was stressed that all alternative routes should be carefully evaluated to avoid steep curves, minimise the need for acquiring private properties, and ensure maximum connectivity to residential areas.

The inspection team also identified potential station locations on vacant State Government or Defence land to provide better facilities for passengers.

The combined alignment at JBS could eliminate the need for a tunnel under the airport runway, significantly reducing construction challenges.

The new route would connect to the NH junction near Sarojini Pulla Reddy Bungalow Road, enabling Metro pillars and viaducts to be built along the widened service road without disrupting ongoing highway flyover work.

JBS is set to become a major Metro hub, serving commuters from Secunderabad, northern Hyderabad, and Telangana districts. Around 30 acres of land from the State Government and Defence authorities are expected to be pooled for this purpose.

The JBS-Shamirpet corridor will directly extend from an existing Metro pillar near Secunderabad Club. It will be constructed as a double-elevated structure over HMDA’s elevated corridor on the Karimnagar Highway, which is currently being widened.

These efforts aim to overcome technical obstacles and create a seamless Metro network, improving connectivity and travel convenience for Hyderabad residents and visitors.
