The Union government has approved a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the Musi Riverfront Development Project, official. Under the agreement, ADB will disburse Rs 4,100 crore in the first phase, The New Indian Express reported.
A consortium including Meinhardt, Cushman & Wakefield, RIOS, ZHA, and SOM is expected to submit Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) and comprehensive plans within two weeks.
The approval follows discussions between Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and ADB representatives in New Delhi, with municipal administration officials also consulting the Finance Ministry under his guidance.
The project envisions iconic developments such as the Gateway of Hyderabad at Kothwalguda and Gandhi Sarovar at Bapu Ghat, which will feature the world’s tallest Mahatma Gandhi statue and a museum promoting Gandhian philosophy.
“The riverbed will be cleaned. Walking tracks, shopping malls, amphitheatres, entertainment parks and other utilities will be developed along the Musi. The government will also develop night-time economy. The catchment area will become a happening place, where statues of prominent Telangana and national personalities will be installed,” sources were quoted as saying.
The rejuvenation will cover a 55 km stretch within HMDA limits, transforming the river into both a water grid and a cultural grid.
Plans include the development of historic sites such as the 800 year old Lord Shiva temple at Manchirevula, the Mosque at Charminar, a Gurudwara at Sikhchowni, and a church inspired by Medak Cathedral at Uppal.
The Gateway of Hyderabad will serve as a connectivity hub, linking Chandanvelly and Seetharampur SEZs, the ORR, Chincholi highway, and three industrial parks. Another road will cut travel from Gandipet to Ramoji Film City from 85 km to 55 km, bypassing traffic bottlenecks.
The government also plans to ensure fresh water flow up to Nalgonda district, lifting 20 tmcft from Mallannasagar Dam to fill Osmansagar and Himayatsagar, preventing drainage water from entering the river.
