IIT Bombay has awarded a Rs 542.37-crore contract to Capacit’e Infraprojects for the construction of a building for research and academic purpose on a fast-track basis, Indian Express reported.
The project, part of the institute’s ongoing expansion, will be completed in just 15–18 months — nearly a year faster than regular timelines.
To keep pace with its growing infrastructure demands, IIT Bombay is adopting a fast-track construction model — an approach proven successful in similar large-scale projects.
According to the institute, this method will ensure time efficiency and quicker completion of infrastructure development projects.
The project will be developed in multiple phases. The initial phase includes two major structures — the Research Hub and the Drone Centre — each designed as a ground-plus-nine-storey facility dedicated to academic and research activities.
“The research hub, which will be 17,000 square metres in area, will be used for research and academic activities. The Drone Centre, which will be 12,000 square metres, will be used for research activities involving drones and some administrative offices," an official from the institute administration was quoted as saying by IE.
The conceptual design for the project has been completed while the detailed designing for both buildings is in process.
According to the official, the tenure of 15-18 months will include the entire process from designing of the structure to final possession,” said an official from the institute administration adding that these will be composite steel buildings, most of which will be steel.
Both structures will feature composite steel architecture to ensure strength and speed of construction.
In a statement issued by the Capacit’e Infraprojects Limited, the scope of project includes construction of fast track buildings, including design drawing, finishing works, water supply & sanitary installations, internal & external electrical installation, LAN, WIFI, CCTV, fire-fighting system, automatic fire alarm & PA system, solar PV system, telephone data system, lifts, HVAC, substation equipment, DG set, underground water tank and external development, etc.
This project forms part of IIT Bombay’s larger Rs 2,000-crore campus transformation plan announced last year.
The institute aims to expand hostels, introduce modern academic buildings, and establish cutting-edge research laboratories to align with evolving education and innovation standards.
