Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday (3 July) for a two-day official visit, marking the second leg of his five-nation diplomatic tour, reported The Times of India,
During his address to the Indian community in Port of Spain, Modi referred to his counterpart, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, as “Bihar ki Beti” (daughter of Bihar), noting her ancestral roots in Buxar district.
“Kamla ji’s ancestors lived in Buxar, Bihar. She herself has visited there,” he said, emphasising the deep cultural and ancestral ties that many in Trinidad and Tobago share with India.
PM Modi also shared glimpses of his welcome ceremony on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, writing, “Landed in Port of Spain… this visit will further cement bilateral ties between our nations.”
He was warmly received at the airport by PM Persad-Bissessar and her Cabinet members, many of whom wore Indian attire.
The Prime Minister was also greeted with a traditional Bhojpuri Chautaal performance, which he praised as a “cultural connect like no other” in another post on X.
He highlighted the cultural bridge between India and the Caribbean nation, particularly with eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
As a gesture of respect, PM Modi presented a replica of the Ram Mandir and holy water from the Prayagraj Sangam and Sarayu River to the T&T Prime Minister.
This visit follows his stop in Ghana, with upcoming visits scheduled to Argentina, Brazil (for the BRICS Summit), and Namibia.
