In a bid to further industrial synergy between India and Russia, the 11th session of the India-Russia Working Group on Modernisation and Industrial Cooperation convened at Vanijya Bhawan in New Delhi on Wednesday (6 August).
The dialogue took place under the broader framework of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation, the official statement stated.
The Indian delegation was led by Amardeep Singh Bhatia, Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), while the Russian side was headed by Alexey Gruzdev, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.
The working group, which last met in 2021, assessed progress since its 10th session and mapped the way forward in sectors central to bilateral industrial cooperation.
During the discussions, the two sides explored joint projects in aerospace, including the development of small aircraft engines and the establishment of a wind tunnel facility.
Emerging technologies such as carbon fibre production, additive manufacturing, and 3D printing were also high on the agenda.
Particularly significant was the renewed focus on critical mineral extraction including rare earths and energy cooperation through underground coal gasification. These are key areas where Russia’s resource abundance and India’s growing demand converge.
The meeting also addressed cooperation in fertilisers, aluminium, railway transport, and waste management, with both countries eyeing mutual gains through technology transfer and industrial modernisation.
The session concluded with both co-chairs signing a formal protocol, reiterating the strategic alignment and long-term vision shared by India and Russia.
The session comes against the backdrop of President Trump’s announcement of steep 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods, citing New Delhi’s continued oil imports from Russia.
With Washington turning increasingly hostile, New Delhi appears to be deepening industrial and energy cooperation with Moscow, both to diversify its trade relationships and safeguard strategic interests.
