In a move that could redefine India’s healthcare innovation landscape, the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Gates Foundation, has launched the Mission for Advancement in High-Impact Areas (MAHA) – Medical Technology, or Maha MedTech.

The mission aims to fast-track the development of indigenous medical technologies, reduce reliance on costly imports, and make advanced healthcare solutions affordable and accessible across India.

It is designed to encourage innovation by providing milestone-based financial assistance to a broad range of participants — from academic and R&D institutions to startups, MSMEs, and established MedTech companies.

Each selected project will receive funding between Rs 5 crore and Rs 25 crore, while exceptional cases could receive up to Rs 50 crore.

The initiative seeks to strengthen India’s capacity to develop, manufacture, and deploy cutting-edge medical devices through stronger collaboration between industry and academia.

The scope of the mission extends across diagnostic tools, implants, assistive and surgical devices, consumables, and software-based medical solutions.

It will also support innovations addressing critical national health priorities such as tuberculosis, cancer, neonatal care, and primary healthcare.

Areas like advanced imaging, robotics, minimally invasive surgery, and molecular diagnostics will be among the key focus sectors.

To complement financial aid, the mission will provide technical and regulatory support through dedicated programmes such as Patent Mitra for intellectual property protection, MedTech Mitra for regulatory guidance, and a national Clinical Trial Network for validation and evidence generation.

Mentorship from experienced industry professionals will also help participants move from concept to market.

The two-stage application process has begun with concept note submissions, open from 15 September to 7 November , through the ANRF portal.

The concept proposals that are shortlisted by the committee formed specifically for this purpose will be allowed to submit the full proposals, with the window for submission opening in December.
